NAEYC and DEC codes of ethics


I 1.1  To be familiar with the knowledge base of early childcare and education to stay informed through continuing education and training.

When I read this Ideal I can relate to it because I feel like I have been educating myself for years within the field of early childhood.  I have learned so much through just trying to obtain my Associates, Bachelors and now Master’s Degree.  Also, while in school I have been working in the field for more than seven years learning through experience.  My plan is to continue my knowledge and to obtain my Masters while teaching at Head Start for many more years to come.

 

I 1.4  To appreciate the vulnerability of children and their dependence on adults.

            Although, I have always knew this one, because it makes since to someone who is not in the field.  I gained a new take on it while working in the field and it has been seen in a brand new light since starting school.  Working in the field taught me that children really need to be taught everything, and some have a willingness to want to learn while others are so stubborn and will not do anything for themselves they would rather wait on you.  This is a good concept to grasp because I am not a parent and have never had a child of my own to learn these aspects.  However, going to school has definitely taught me to look at the whole child and help all aspects the complete child.

 

I 1.9  To advocate for and ensure that all children, including those with special needs, have access to the support services that are needed to be successful.

            This is a new term for me in general.  I recently learned who an advocate is and what that person does an August at the beginning of the school year.  I have a family service advocate for my classroom at school.  She is awesome!  Every day she comes to check and make sure all kids are in school.  She looks over their health (just as I do) to ensure that there are no bruises and uncertainties done to the child, and she calls the ones that have missed three days of school.  My goal is to obtain the knowledge that I need for the position and apply for a position like hers one day.  Also, I learned more about advocacy in school through the media presentation.  There were also different groups out there that support children on a daily basis that was introduces to me this semester that looked like they were of interest.  This is definitely a part that I want to expand in my own life.

Also, people are great resources so I would like to add Dr. Dartt to my list because she has a wealth of knowledge within her.  Finally, look in the mirror you are a resource as well.  Self- reflection is the best resource there is.
