The Kissing Hand, by Audrey Penn is my favorite book. I use it on the first day of school. It is about a child being seperated from their mom on the first day of school. The mom puts a kiss in the child's hand and reminds them to hold the kiss near whenever they feel afraid. This book helps so many children adjust just knowing that somehow mom is near by.
Hello Tymeshia!
ReplyDeleteI am also a big fan of this book! I use it every year during my small group orientation sessions. During this first day to school, children bring their parents along with them for part of the day. Before the parents leave, we read the kissing hand and each child then shares a kissing hand with their parent(s) before sending them on their way. I find it helps to reduce some of the separation anxieties that some of the kids (and parent!) feel that first day!

I was not familiar with this book and just looked it up. It really is precious and it must be soothing for the children who are trying to settle into nursery. We have just ordered a few copies for the teachers to enjoy and use accordingly. Lovely choice. Zeina Ghantous
ReplyDeleteA wonderful story, my co-teacher and I added this book to our library from the beginning of the year, and also encouraged families to bring in a variety of photos for our family wall, and we also provided mini photo books for the children to go to when they are feeling sad, or missing their family.
